Moonlight Benjamin – Haitian punk voodoo queen
Moonlight Benjamin represents a powerful fusion between Haitian voodoo music, swampy Louisiana grit and sultry 1970s blues rock.
With her powerful and rebellious voice, she delivers lyrics in Haitian Creole and French, which she combines with solid guitar lines, wild primal drumming, chants from real voodoo priestesses and melodies by Mizik Rasin, into a mystical and intoxicating voodoo trance.
The latest album Wayo (2023) continues a journey of Moonlight Benjamin’s signature Caribbean blues-rock fusion style, which started with her 2018 album ‘Siltane’ and followed by her acclaimed 2020 album Simido. With Wayo, she adds a mystical, raw and almost shamanic touch to her music.
‘There are no small dreams,’ Benjamin says of ‘Haut là haut’, a recent track. ‘Despite the hardships we go through, it’s good to keep our dreams big and alive.’
