Black Uhuru – legendary Jamaican reggae

Black Uhuru is undoubtedly one of the most legendary reggae bands from Kingston and has been at the absolute top for over 45 years!

The band is best known for the hits “Shine eye gal,” “Guess who’s coming to dinner” and “What is life?”. The original Uhuru’s (Swahili for freedom) were Derrick “Duckie” Simpson, Euvin “Don Carlos” Spencer and Rudolph “Garth” Dennis. Since their formation in the early 1970s, Black Uhuru had many changing singers and musicians, with the only constant being Derrick “Duckie” Simpson – the “Gong Gong Gullie.”

With no less than 14 studio albums, 7 instrumental dub records and 4 live albums, Black Uhuru is one of the most prolific reggae bands of all time, and with a whole backpack full of Grammy Awards! Their signature sound consists of deep bass tones, loud drums, sharp keyboards and drawn-out guitar lines but most of all the signature ‘woh oh oh’s’.

Come and sing them along!
